Day 8 Olympic Fencing: Womens Saber Team
Day 8 again was a great day for US fencing. The women's saber team entered the team relay with a strong 4th rank. First they fenced against Poland. The US team started very strong and gained 10 points lead in the first 4 bouts. After the polish team upped their game and started to close the gap but the US team managed to win with a 45-43 final score.
In the semi final US faced Russia. The Russians were leading all the way until the first bout of the last round when Muhammad turned around the score with a 10-4 win against Dyachenko. Unfortunately the next bout Velikaya beat Wozniak and regain the lead entering the last bout 35-40. Beside Zagunis 7-5 win against Egorian the final score was 42-45.
In the bronze medal match the US team only dropped one bout and beat Italy with a final score of 45-30. With 4 medals the US fencing team finished in the top 3 in overall medal standing beside Russia and Hungary. This result clearly represents the rise of fencing within the US. Congratulations to all the fencers and coaches for the fantastic performance through the Olympics!
