Monday, the women's saber fencers competed in the Olympic fencing arena. Two Russian fencers faced each other in the final who were ranked first and sixth in the world ranking coming in to Rio. Velikaya Sofia was ranked first and Egorian Yana sixth..
In a great bout Egorian defeated Velikaya 15-14. The bronze medal match was between Brunet Manon from France and Olga Kharlan (London 2012 bronze medalist) from Ukraine. Olga Kharlan was able to hold on to the lead and won the Bronze medal with a 15-10 victory.
The American saber fencers had high hopes for this Olympics but unfortunately fell short of expectations with Mariel Zagunis a 2 times Olympic champion 2004, 2008 (Beaverton, Ore.) and Ibtihaj Muhammad both exiting in the round of 16 and Dagmara Wozniak (Avenel, N.J.) exiting in the 32.
