Olympic Fencing Day 1 Results
Womens Epee was the first of the fencing events to start off the Olympics and the final was truly a great bout between two strong fencers.
Emese Szasz from Hungary wins gold medal on the first day of the Olympics.
Emese Szasz from Hungary won the first fencing competition (women's epee) at the 2016 Olympic games. Szasz is ranked among the top women epee fencers for over a decade. She has won numerous world and European championship medals but has not been able to get into the top 4 in her previous 2 Olympic games.
In the final she won against the 2 times world champion Rosella flamingo. She came back from a 10-6 deficit, she took over the lead at 13-12 and the final score was 15-13.
Americans Katharine Holmes and sisters Courtney and Kelley Hurley, all ranked outside the top 10, lost their first matches.
