Alexander Massialas wins Silver in men's foil
The second day brought the first men's individual medal for the US fencing team in 36 years. Alexander Massialas finished 2nd in men's foil and lived up to his ranking. Massialas who is currently ranked 1st in the world entered the tournament as a 2nd ranked favorite after Ota from Japan. He won his first 2 bouts with a comfortable 15-7 and 15-9 win. In the quarter final he made a fantastic come back to win from 9-14 against Avola of Italy. In the semi-final he beat Richard Cruse from Great Britain, and lost the final to Daniele Garozzo from Italy.
The other two U.S. foil fencers Gerek Meinhardt and Miles Chamley-Watson were both eliminated earlier in the day. Meinhardt was eliminated by Kruse in the quarterfinals while Chamley-Watson lost to Russian Artur Akhmatkhuzin in the Round of 32.
